Pick Me! My Doug Loves Movies Signage

Surely everyone listens to Doug Loves Movies, right? It's my favorite podcast, and if you're not already a regular listener, here's a quick overview from Wikipedia:

In 2006, comedian Doug Benson began hosting a weekly comedy podcast, titled Doug Loves Movies (Formerly I Love Movies with Doug Benson), which is recorded in front of a live audience at the Upright Citizens Brigade Theatre in Los Angeles. The show typically tapes weekly, and is later archived on iTunes for fans to listen to for free. Benson and guests talk about movies and comedy both. Benson's guests have included such notables as John Lithgow, Leonard Maltin, Brian Posehn, Joe Rogan, Zach Galifianakis, Sarah Silverman, Patton Oswalt, Jon Hamm, Adam Carolla, David Cross, Bob Odenkirk, Scott Aukerman, Adam Scott, Bill Simmons, Aziz Ansari, Amy Poehler, Elizabeth Shue, Aubrey Plaza, Michael Cera, Edgar Wright, Paul F. Tompkins and Jordan, the baseball-toting superfan.

A regular feature of the podcast is the Leonard Maltin Game, which has been described as Name That Tune with movies instead of songs. The game consists of Benson reading the cast of an unknown movie in reverse order (star of the movie comes last) from Leonard Maltin's Movie Guide to his guests, who attempt to guess the movie.

The show typically opens with Doug and guests talking about movies, and then segues into the "games" portion. Before you get to the Leonard Maltin Game, there is often a round or two of warm up games, which can include "Build a Title," "How Much Did This Shit Make?" and/or "A-B-C-Deez Nuts."

The celebrity guests compete not only to advance to the season-ending "Tournament of Championships" (an ultra-competitive "Super Bowl" of the Leonard Maltin Game), but also for fans in the audience where the podcast is being recorded. Each guest picks one audience member to play for, and if that celebrity wins, their corresponding fan wins a prize pack of items brought by Doug and the panel. Fans wanting to be picked by a guest hold up signs, almost always relating to movies, with their names on them.

I've never been to a DLM live show, but if I did go, I put together what would be my sign. Not only is it one of my favorite movies, it also lends itself well to incorporating my name:

Talking "Echo," The Original Dollhouse Pilot

Saturday, I had the chance to guest on John Pavlich's SOFA DOGS podcast to discuss the original, unaired pilot of Dollhouse, "Echo."

I had a great time during my previous visit to the podcast to chat about another Whedon property, the sublime Cabin In The Woods, and this time was no different. Things we covered: Dollhouse would have made a great FX show. Is Eliza so criticized as an actress that she's actually underrated? A comparison of the two pilots and which one is actually better. FOX is not the evil empire and killer of genre shows. And of course, how fucking awesome is Olivia Williams/Adelle DeWitt? (on this I will brook no disagreement. The answer is "really fucking awesome").

Sunday, I was the guest host for "What's On with Steph & Des," a podcast discussing the previous week in television. I've been on the show before as a fill-in host, and it's always fun to talk TV with Steph when Des is vacationing.

But in case you haven't, I've been talking with Wendy and some of the folks from Tuning in to SciFi TV about Game of Thrones all season. I'm the lone book-reader on the podcast, but no worries about spoilers -- I only discuss the novels as they relate to minor plot changes (like Qarth) or character digressions (Tywin & Arya, for example, or Talisa) from what we've seen on-screen thus far.

Talking TV

This past Sunday, I had the honor of guesting on the "What's On with Steph & Des" podcast to talk about -- you guessed it -- television. Des was taking a break ("on hiatus" as they say in the TV biz), so Steph and I chatted for a long while about what we watched the week prior. We watch a lot of the same things, but A) she tried to explain what the hell went on last week with Survivor, and B) I tried to convince her that Archer is the funniest show on TV (I don't know if "robot vagina in the sink" really convinced her). All that, plus discussions about the various "best show of all time" brackets and some Whedon love.

Hear Me Roar

Last week, I made another guest appearance on the Tuning In To SciFi TV Podcast Game of Thrones specials, to chat about everyone's favorite sweet and homespun family, the Lannisters. They're just like the Waltons of Westeros, right? C'mon, you know you love them all.

It was fun chatting with Wendy and Kimberly about the Lannisters. Note: we talk about the TV show ONLY (not the books), so our comments and discussions are limited to the events of season 1 of the HBO show -- so no spoilers beyond that.

However, on a quasi-related note, I'm all caught up with all four of the previous Song of Ice and Fire novels, and started chapter one of the just-published A Dance With Dragons about 30 minutes ago.  All I will say is HOLY SHIT. (For what it's worth, A Storm of Swords was breathtaking, and easily my choice for the best book in the series thus far).

In case you don't follow me on the twitters, or missed the blurbs, I recently had the honor of guesting on two podcasts:

First, I was on What's On With Steph & Des, subbing for the regular co-host Des who was on vacation. Steph & I talked about TV for the week of July 4th and the (at that time) upcoming Emmy nominations. That episode can be found here, or you can also find it in iTunes.

Then, I was on Tuning In To SciFi TV's first Game of Thrones special podcast. Tuning In To SciFi is a long running podcast about genre television, and they will be featuring several bonus episodes about Game of Thrones (I will be coming back for more discussions on the show as the series progresses). The idea is to follow a "house" or "geography" for each of the discussions, and we mainly chatted about the Starks this time (like Ned: Great character. Honorable man. Terrible detective and strategist). You can find that episode here, or find it in iTunes.

They also have a spinoff series dedicated to "Saturday B-Movies," usually the ones shown on SyFy. However, they are dipping into the past to revisit some classics, and I should be chatting about The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across The 8th Dimension sometime in the near future, so be on the lookout for that, monkey-boys.

In which I talk about, surprise, television

I recently guested on the "Confessions of An Internet Addict" podcast with the charming and welcoming Stephanie. You can find my particular episode here. Or, if you want it in iTunes, I believe it should be here.


I virtually met Steph on the twitter, and we seem to share a love for all things TV. So naturally, we talked a lot about the tube - likes, dislikes and upcoming shows we're eagerly anticipating. No major spoilers for anything (unless you were catching up on The X-Files and hoping the mythology all made perfect sense at the end. In which case, uh, enjoy the standalones. They're really good).

She was a gracious host, and this was my first podcast. I had a great time, and didn't sound too much like an idiot. This was also the most prolonged exposure to my own voice I've ever had. And while I'm not Janice from Friends or The Nanny, I do have to wonder....where the hell am I from? What exactly is that accent, other than marinated in whiskey and Marlboros? (Although, either through careful editing, or my game of "quiet mouse" while recording, you didn't hear the ice in my glass or my zippo like you always did with Ron Moore podcasts).
