Words of Wisdom

Here's a fun list from Wired of "100 Quotes Every Geek Should Know"

Most of the ones you would expect to be on there are on there. Here are a few favorites I find myself using that aren't quite as ubiquitous:

“Greetings, programs!” -Flynn, TRON

“If we knew what it was we were doing, it would not be called research, would it?” - Albert Einstein

“Okay. You people sit tight, hold the fort and keep the home fires burning. And if we’re not back by dawn… call the president.” - Jack Burton, Big Trouble in Little China“Oooh, ahhh, that’s how it always starts. Then later there’s running and screaming.” - Ian Malcolm, The Lost World: Jurassic Park

  1. Kinda suprised to see the Seinfeld quotes, never thought it had that much geek appeal. Here is my favorites.
"Worst. Episode. Ever." Comic Book Guy-My favorite, so flexible, so many uses.

If you can’t take a little bloody nose, maybe you oughtta go back home and crawl under your bed. It’s not safe out here. It’s wondrous, with treasures to satiate desires both subtle and gross; but it’s not for the timid.” — Q, Star Trek: The Next Generation “Q Who?”
“No matter what you hear in there, no matter how cruelly I beg you, no matter how terribly I may scream, do not open this door or you will undo everything I have worked for.” - Young Frankenstein
“Who’s gonna turn down a Junior Mint? It’s chocolate, it’s peppermint - it’s delicious!” - Kramer, Seinfeld “Bring out your dead.” Monty Python and the Holy Grail

  2. I will admit that two of my faves are right there in the top 10: numbers 1 & 8.

Though they are missing a couple of good ones from Real Genius - i.e., "Why is that toy on your head?" and "Self-realization Mitch. I was thinking of the immortal words of Socrates, who said, "... I drank what?"

  3. Yeah, I was surprised by some of the sources (like "Seinfeld") being characterized as "geek." It wasn't a perfect list, but it was fun. And I was amazed at how many I use in everyday life.

I recently introduced a friend to Aliens for the first time, and I also became aware that pretty much every single line Pvt. Hudson uses ("Game over, man, game over!" for example) has become part of my vernacular.

Confession time: somehow, Real Genius slipped through my movie watching history. I realized this a couple of weeks ago, when everyone was making a big deal of world class asshole portrayer William Atherton showing up on Lost. I know him, of course, as "this man has no dick" from Ghostbusters, and Die Hard, but the other classic role that kept coming up was Real Genius. And I went hmmmmm. Have I seen that? I don't think so. Maybe I'll add that to my queue.

  4. Totally unrelated question...have you started reading Game of Thrones yet? If so, what do you think?

  5. Scott: no, not yet. Things are getting busy around here, and I haven't had a chance to dive into the books sitting on my table thus far. I probably won't have a chance to for a another couple of weeks, but I'm looking forward to it. I'll be sure to post a blog about it when I do, given how many folks have raved about it. Plus, I'm looking forward to comparing/contrasting with the upcoming HBO series.

  6. Didn't know it was turning into an HBO series until these comments, but the George R.R. Martin series is very good stuff. Warning, its appears to be much like the Robert Jordan series in that no end is in sight.
